After 2 or 3 months of septum dreams, I decided to just go ahead and do it. The upcoming DC/Philly munch seemed to be the perfect time, as I don't trust anyone in Boulder to do it. Kristin at Infinite did the deed and it was probably my easiest pierce yet. She installed a 16g black niobium retainer (the choice for retainers was either 10g or 16g), which was all but invisible once in my nose. The sensation of having metal in my septum was weird at first, but I got used to it quickly.
Everything was going great until my shower the next day. One second I was trying to figure out how to clean it and the next second, my retainer was lying on the bathtub's bottom. I hopped out of the shower and spent 15 minutes trying to get the retainer back in, but it was too late. I couldn't even find the hole, let alone put the jewelry back.
I'm not sure when I will be getting this repierced. I still don't want anyone in Colorado to do it and I won't be out of state for a while. My other concern was inhaling the retainer when I'm exercising. Since the retainer fell out so easily, I'm waring of re-piercing, at least with a retainer again.
At any rate, I'm glad I finally went ahead and got it pierced, but damn - I wish it had worked out.
