Sheryl's Modifications

My name is Sheryl Pockrose. I'm a cataloging librarian at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, working mainly with rare books, foreign language materials, and CD-ROM's. I've worked for this system in various capacities since shortly after completing my MLS at Indiana in 1982.

Currently I am 40. I got my first tattoo WAY before it was the "thing to do," for my 20th birthday in 1978. It is a purple flower above my right breast, and my mother sewed me a one-strapped top so I could show it off at the small church-affiliated college I was attending. It was not well  received, so I didn't show it much. I had it done at Dana Brunson's studio, but he was off that day, so Tim McGuire did it.

My major tattoo is the lightning bolts/clouds on my upper right arm, which I designed. I started with one bolt for my 35th birthday, two more bolts the next year, and the clouds in 1997. I'm considering having it extended around the back into a quarter-sleeve. When I first got the clouds, my father wouldn't let me in the house with it showing, but he got over it.

I have three holes in my right ear and one in my left. The first set was done when I was 16, the first added hole at a mall in Boston around 10 years ago, and the last done myself with a disposable gun a few years ago. I don't plan on any more, or any piercings elsewhere.

None of my modifications has been a problem at work. I only wear sleeveless clothes to after-hours events, although most of the staff have seen my arm tattoo. The earrings are visible, but I usually wear something tasteful and unobtrusive during working hours. I was joking with a supervisor about piercing my nose, and he did say he would have a problem with any type of body piercing. There is nothing against it in our dress code, but I really have never felt the desire for holes other than in my ears. We have a lot of tattooed clerical staff, but I haven't noticed any on the professional staff. We also have a few women who shave their heads on occasion.

I am a wild type, so anyone who knows me very well is not surprised by the tattoos, but some people at work have been. I did intentionally put them in areas easily covered, rather than on my ankle or wrist, so that I can choose when to display them. The lightning bolt motif symbolizes the energy of the universe.

I have a web page: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6386 There are no pics of me on it, but there are links to various sites of interest on the "Coolsites" part of the page.
