Pati's Modifications

My name is Pati and I'm the Head of the Special Collections Processing Department at Louisiana State University.

I got my tattoo in Austin, Texas, right before I moved away. I had finished library school and was having trouble finding a job. I was reluctant to take this position - I didn't want to leave Austin, but I did want to be an archivist and be paid a decent salary. Anyway, I wound up in this tiny town in North Louisiana. I got the tattoo to remind me that there's a lot more to the world than me and my problems and in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter where in the world you are or who you are with, you're still responsible for yourself and your happiness.  I also wanted to insure that I'd never grow up to be one of those stuffy bun-haired librarians that won't let people read what they want to read.

I haven't had any negative comments or reactions to my tattoo. I guess that's because it's on my back, so it doesn't show unless I want it too. I did wear a backless dress to a librarian Christmas party and got some unwelcome attention from the crotchedy old men librarians (you know who you are). But maybe that was just the eggnog.

The first question I'm always asked is, "Did it hurt?" This is usually followed very quickly with, "Why three stars?" (Which is something I never even considered when I got it - it just seemed aesthetically pleasing. I'm an aethist, so I find no particular mysticism in the number three.). The strangest question I was ever asked was, "Did you do it yourself?" Yeah, right, lady. That would be some talent.
