Nicholas' Modifications

My name is Nicholas, and I am a graduate student in an archives program.  I will be receiving my MLIS in the summer of 1999. I have been modifying myself for 10 years, starting with hair dye and then moving on to tattoos, piercings and corsets. Currently, I am employed as a circulation assistant at one of the university's libraries. The only piercings I can wear to work are my earrings, and my tattoos are covered by shirts. I can't be too crazy with my hair color anymore (black is about the only color it can be). After I am established in the profession, I plan on more modifications, but nothing that would get me fired. I hope that won't be a consideration, but it is likely to be.

This was my first tattoo, which I got at Trilogy Tattoo in Dallas in 1995. The triskelion is a symbol of the union of mind, body and spirit. It is my chosen pagan symbol. It was almost a religious experience. The outline hurt, but by the time the tattooist was filling in the last part, it felt as if she was lightly brushing my back. It was very pleasurable.

I got this Eye of Ra tattoo at Atomic Tattoo in Austin in 1998. I went with my friend Lisa, another modified librarian, to get it, and it was a bonding experience for the two of us.

I got my first ear piercing (the bottom left one) when I was 17. Then my other ear and the second left hole were pierced in 1993, and that same year I got my right cartilidge pierced. In November 1993, after months of self-debate, I got my nostril pierced. It was going to be my first piercing that wasn't in my ears, so I was nervous. However, as soon as I did it, I wanted more. Three years later, my septum was the next to go under the needle. I also have a prince albert, but I won't show you that one. I had a nipple piercing, but it never healed properly, so I removed it.

An extra closeup of my nose piercings.

I like these piercings the most (besides my nostril). No one really notices them too often. The rear one I got in Dallas in 1995, a month before my first tattoo. I got the second one in 1996. They healed really quickly, and I've never had problems wearing them at work.

Me on the weekend.
