Lynn's Modifications
Greetings. My name is Lynn Zummo. I am a librarian by education and an odd combination of Web developer/Internet trainer/Systems, Acquisitions, and Reference Librarian by trade. I hold the position as one of three Community Network Specialists for the Three Rivers Free-Net, a community network and a project of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (PA). I began here in April of 1997 after a four year stint at the University of Pittsburgh Barco Law Library, where I was in a paraprofessional position in acquisitions. I also work part-time for two public libraries -- Monroeville PL (Internet Services Librarian) and Peters Township PL (Systems Librarian). I received my MLS (from Pitt) while at Barco in August of 1996 (take advantage of that employee discount kids!).

I began my tattoo experience in September of 1994 with an anklet around my right ankle. It consists of an orca (killer whale) and waves. It's nice ink, even though I did move a little and there are spots that show it! I had always wanted a tattoo, but was too scared to do it (I am NOT into pain). Then a friend of mine got one and I decided that if she could do it, then I could, too. All of my work has been done at BodyWorks Tattoo Studio in Penn Hills, PA (eastern suburb of Pittsburgh) by either Moose (unfortunately deceased) or Don McDonald. |

I moved on to getting an outline of a sun I designed on my left shoulderblade (May 1995). I then got that filled in and added a moonface on the right shoulderblade (September 1995). |

Lastly, I have a totem-style orca on my left ankle (March 1997). The orca is my totem animal and I feel a special connection to it. I also love the ocean and the beach, so I have a little bit of it all on me -- the water on my ankle, the sun and moon (controlling the tides, right?) on my back. Other than that, there was no special life event for which I can attribute these. As the phrase goes, "It's a mile to the first tatoo, a minute to the next...". |
In addition to my tattoos, I have my right ear pierced eight times, the left twice (photo to be supplied at a later date). I also had a navel piercing, but it would not heal correctly (I had some alergic reaction), so out it came. I would love to get my nose pierced. Actually, I have wanted this even before I wanted tattoos -- I love the image Indian women present with the diamond or other gem in the nostril -- but I am afraid that I will have a similar reaction to my navel disaster. I definitely don't want a huge puss blister in the middle of my face!
As far as flak (or not) from work, I am relatively suprised at the lack of issue with my mods. The two on my back are rarely visible, but my ankles almost always are showing. The most common reaction is positive (except for a former supervisor who exclaimed "And I thought you wanted to be a PROFESSIONAL!". I patiently told her I wan't getting a labotomy!), especially to my earrings. The most frequent question for both the tats and the piercings is "Did it hurt?". Most people have no reaction what-so-ever. Perhaps the world is relaxing.
