Gail's Modifications

My name is Gail Kwak and I'm the Government Documents Librarian at Watson Library Northwestern State University in Natchitoches LA. I received my Master of Library Science from the University of Kentucky in August 1991.  I worked as a paraprofessional in the Circulation Department and later in Reference/Government Documents Department until I finally took the leap into a professional position.  I have been at Northwestern State since 1 July 1997.

I got this lovely tattoo of a butterfly on my ankle at Tattoo Charlie's in Lexington KY in 1991.  I had been considering such a tattoo for several years and finally got up the nerve to have it done when I read about Tattoo Charlie's in the Kentucky Kernel in the summer of 1991.  I decided to check the place out and finally get my tattoo. When I got this tattoo, I don't think anyone I worked with even noticed until I showed them - even then no one had any adverse reaction.

My right ear is pierced four times.  I aquired these piercings between 1981 and about 1986.  The first two piercings were done professionally at Claire's Boutique in Jefferson Mall Louisville KY.  After that I took matters into my own hands and did the other two piercings myself.  Ouch!  I don't wear all my earrings to job interviews, but once I'm on the job I stop being shy and put them in.  The patrons don't seem to notice my multiple ear piercings, but when they do they think it's "cool" for a librarian to do something so unusual.  As for the other librarians I work with, they don't seem to care.  I've only gotten positive comments from coworkers.

At the moment, my left ear is pierced seven times.  I acquired the lower six piercings between 1981 and 1989.  Again, the first two holes were done professionally, but after that I started doing them myself.  It seems like once I got started I just couldn't stop!  The frontal or helix piercing was done on 9/11/98 by Master Piercer Greg Dinkens at The Hole Thing in Lexington KY while I was delivering my standard discourse on intellectual freedom much to the amusement of my husband and my best friend who were just along to watch.  I highly recommend this studio!  It is spotlessly clean and totally professional.  Greg is a true professional who can put even the most nervous client at ease.  When my helix piercing heals, I will consider getting another one just below it.

Update:  I got my second helix piercing on 3/19/99 by Emily Tessier at Under The Surface in Baton Rouge, LA.  As soon as the swelling abates I will update the picture.

And because so many of you have asked, this is what I look like.  Be careful what you ask for...

Notice the resemblence to Tina The Troubled Teen below.  I looked like her when I was that age back in 1979-ish.
